Frequently Asked Questions
Our butter is made on Brue Valley Farm, where the same family has been churning butter for generations. Our organic cream is churned not once, but twice, resulting in a fresh and exceptionally creamy butter.
Good question! Churning is the process by which butter is made. Cream is beaten vigorously (or churned) causing the fat molecules to clump together, thereby separating the fat content from the liquid, eventually transforming it into butter. The liquid which remains is a very low fat liquid called buttermilk. After this first churning, our butter is taken and churned again, expelling even more liquid and resulting in a butter with a high fat content, making it creamy and delicious.
The process of double churning results in a butter which has a higher fat content and lower water content compared to other butter’s on the market. This results in a texture that you might not be used to. But do not worry! This is totally normal :) We will always do our best to ensure your butter is the best, creamiest, richest and most delicious butter on the market, so don’t worry… just start spreading.
Each block of our organic butter is churned twice and hand-salted in small batches, resulting in fresh and exceptionally creamy butter. The flavoured butters are made in small batches using fresh ingredients. These factors contribute to a shorter shelf life compared to other supermarket brands, which are processed and contain preservatives resulting in a longer shelf life. We typically give at least 14 days for Flavours and 21 days for Salted and Unsalted.
We only use pasteurised milk. Pasteurised milk is raw milk which has been heated sufficiently to remove any harmful bacteria. This ensures nothing harmful makes its way into our butter.
The yellow hue in butter is attributed to the natural pigment beta-carotene, which also makes butter a Vitamin A source. Cows consuming green fodder, such as grass, tend to produce milk with higher carotene levels, resulting in butter with a more pronounced yellow colour compared to cows fed dry feed like grains. Gertie, Daisy, Buttercup and Queenie looooovee grass. Especially Queenie.
Yes, yes and yes! We are proud to say that our Salted and Unsalted butter is made with 100% organic British cream. This is actually a pretty big deal, as the majority of butters that you might find on shelves at the supermarket are not organic. Unlike conventional butter, our organic butter is free from any additives or unwanted substances. It is packed with nutrients, vitamins and protein, providing nourishment while enhancing the flavours of your favourite foods! While our flavoured butters are not made with organic cream, we ensure they are made with the finest ingredients.
